Select the corresponding key above to go directly to the entries for that county. The standard county Chapman Codes are used, except for
(a) the Ridings of Yorkshire, where ERY. NRY and WRY are replaced by YKE, YKN and YKW, so that they are listed in a more logical order; and
(b) London where, for Districts within the metropolitan area, KEN, LND and MDX and SRY are replaced by LNK, LNM and LNS - this is to distinguish them from the other Districts within those counties which lay outside the metropolitan area.
Each Registration District within a county is normally coded by the first three letters of its Name. The exceptions are where two or more Registration Districts within the same county have names which start with the same first three letters. In such cases, an alternative meaningful code is used, and the Name is identified in the table below with an asterisk.
Please note that the areas covered by some Districts straddled county boundaries, the county under which they are shown relating to the main area covered. This list refers to the period 1837-1930, during which time a large number of Districts listed were abolished, merged, re-named or newly created.
The Registration District under which the parish or place was administered will relate to any birth, marriage or death within that parish or place recorded from 1837 onwards under Civil Registration, and to the order in which Census Returns are arranged.
