A

EDWARD RIGGS, co.Cork [EDWARD#9]

Cork Marriage Licence Bonds include a bond for the marriage of an EDWARD RIGGS with MARY TARTERINE (sic). This is said to be in the year 1726 [S58] but Mary was apparently referred to as Mary RIGGS in the Will of her father Benjamin TARTARAIN, M.D., and that was said to have been dated MAY1720 (and proved 1730).[S58] It is assumed that this Edward RIGGS was probably related to the family of EDWARD RIGGS OF RIGGSDALE but the nature of that relationship has not yet been established.

The Will of an Edward Riggs of Kinsale was probated in 1749.[S60]

B

JOHN RIGGS, Esq, co.Cork

Father of GRACE RIGGS (see below). Since Grace's marriage is said to have taken place about 1734, John would have probably been born before 1690. He may have been the father of the above Edward (or an older brother).

C

GRACE RIGGS, co.Cork

"GRACE, daughter of JOHN RIGGS Esq of the county of Cork married Richard ORPEN of Ardtully in the county of Kerry"[S28] (Ardtully was within the civil parish of Kilgarvan). A modern researcher reports that Richard was born about 1698 and that Grace's marriage to him took place about 1734.[S29] Another reports that Richard died in 1740-1 and that his will was proved in 1741.[S30]

D

ALICE RIGGS, co.Cork

Miss ALICE RIGGS married Thomas CORKER of Firgrove, Innishannon 01AUG1759.[S36] The fact that she was described as "Miss" implies that she was from a family with social status. As you can see from the map at the beginning of this section, Innishannon is only some 5 miles from Riggsdale, and Alice may well be related to EDWARD RIGGS OF RIGGSDALE. It is also possible, from the dates quoted, that she may have been either the daughter of Edward#9 and Mary RIGGS referred to above, or of a brother of Grace, i.e. a grand-daughter of John.

E

GEORGE RIGGS, Esq, co.Limerick

GEORGE RIGGS, gentleman of Milltown, co.Limerick, paid £200 as a marriage portion as part of the pre-Marriage agreement between his daughter ELLIN (sic) RIGGS and JONAS STUMBLE of Killeen, Co Tipperary dated 26APR1708. The post Marriage Settlement was dated 10JUL1708 and Jonas settled over 360 acres on his wife. The memorials of both deeds were registered 17MAY1709.[S155]

GEORGE RIGGS, born in co.Limerick, the son of GEORGE RIGGS, gentleman, was admitted 5MAY1727 to Trinity College, Dublin, age 18.[S157] Since he was therefore born about 1708, he could have been either the son or the grandson of George, the father of Ellin. His schoolmaster is shown as "Mr.Chinnery, Midleton" but Midleton is some 10 miles east of Cork in co.Cork, and the list of Schoolmasters at the front of the source reference shows that a St Leger Chinnery was the schoolmaster at Bandon, which is some 10 miles south west of Cork (and only some 5 miles west-south-west of Riggsdale).
