THOMAS RIGGS (THOMAS)

Born 7DEC1666, in Gloucester, Essex Co, MA. (1:584) [S9]

Thomas married ANN WHEELER of Salisbury, Essex Co MA 22NOV1687, in Amesbury, Gloucester, Essex Co, MA. [S6] She was the daughter of Henry Wheeler and the elder sister of Ruth, who later married Thomas's brother John. [S5]

According to Babson, Thomas died AUG1756, aged eighty-nine years and eight months. His Will, proved Oct. 18, 1756 named his married daughters and, since one of them did not marry until MAY1747 and another married daughter died JAN1749, it is deduced that his Will was written between these two dates [S8].

A recent researcher states that Ann died 28SEP1723 in Gloucester, Essex Co, MA and that Thomas took as his second wife ELIZABETH WOOD sometime after 10FEB1724. [S13] When she too died 19MAY1729, the researcher states that Thomas then took as his third wife a DOROTHY FROBENSON sometime after 26MAY1736. [S13]

Thomas's house, built circa 1690 (possibly on his marriage in November 1687), was a plank framed house, separated from that of Thomas his father by some 28 acres of pasture. It is still standing to this day, and lies to the east of the modern day Washington Street, which is the main road (Route 127) that rings the island in the 3/4ths of the pasture preserved as the Goose Cove Reservation.

Her father's Will, which was probably written between MAY1747 and JAN1749, referred to her under her married name of ABIGAIL ELWELL. [S8] Two recent researchers state that Abigail the daughter of John and Ruth married JOSHUA ELWELL [S13][S14] on either 28NOV1717 [S13] or 28NOV1719 [S14]. However, in view of Thomas's WIll, it was more probably his daughter Abigail who married JOSHUA ELWELL, the two Abigails having been confused with each other.
14.	ANN RIGGS No entry was found of Ann's birth in the Gloucester Vital Records [S9]. However, please see the Note on ANN RICHARDSON daughter of THOMAS RIGGS which argues that she was born after Abigail. After reasoning that argument, a recent researcher strengthens it by stating that Ann was born 30DEC1693 in Gloucester, Essex Co, MA. [S13] ANN RIGGS married Joseph Richardson Junior in Gloucester 24FEB1712N (2:451) [S9], and was referred to by Thomas in his Will (amongst his other married daughters) as Ann Richardson [S8]. Ann, wife of Joseph Richardson, died 7JAN1749 in Newbury, Essex Co, MA (2:706). [S9]

He must have died before MAY1747, since Lydia then filed intentions to marry with SOLOMON DAVIS 29MAY1747. [S8] Her father's Will must therefore have been written after MAY1747, because it referred to her under her married name of LYDIA DAVIS. [S12]

Wallace states that "They settled on the westerly side of the Annisquam River and resided there till he died". John died 12JAN1748N. [S3]

A recent researcher states that Ruth died in 1732 in Gloucester, Essex Co, MA. [S13]
