Thomas married SARAH LANE 17DEC1713.[S42:p147] Sarah was a younger sister of James and John Lane who married Ruth and Mary Riggs, respectively, the daughters of John and Ruth. She was also a younger sister of Dorcas Lane who married 8JAN1713 William Tucker, son of John and Sarah (Riggs) Tucker. "She died 18NOV1715 and he next married Sarah Hunt of Ipswich. There were children by the second marriage. We do not know that there were any by the first. He was dead in 1740."[S42:p147] A recent researcher states that the date of Thomas's marriage to SARAH HUNT was 9MAY1717.[S14]

Thomasine was entered in the Register as 'TAMPSON WINTWORTH' but Savage[S3] notes that 'Tamasin' (born 4JAN1702) was the daughter of Benjamin Wentworth, youngest son of WILLIAM WENTWORTH of Dover.

Thomasine, wife of Aaron died 21AUG1743 aged 42 (3:258) [S9]. She died the same day as their youngest (and thirteenth) child Aaron, six days after his birth.

Left with a very large and very young family, Aaron soon remarried, he and ANNA RIGGS filing their intention to marry in Gloucester 22SEP1744 (2:452) [S9]. Anna alias Anne Riggs was the daughter of Andrew and Mary - according to Babson [S8] (p61) "Aaron next married his cousin Anne Riggs, daughter of his uncle Andrew. She died 1AUG1773, aged sixty-two."

It is more probable that the year '1742' is an error in transcribing '1741' rather than vice versa, otherwise this Elizabeth was born 8 months before the next child AARON (though, if Aaron had been born prematurely, that might account for the death of both him and his mother six days after birth). Elizabeth married DAVID KNIGHT.[S37] A recent researcher has stated that Elizabeth married WILLIAM TUCKER 16 Aug 1773,[S14] but this may be a mistake bearing in mind that Elizabeth's oldest sister Anna married WILLIAM TUCKER, Jr. 3NOV1743 in Gloucester (see above).

JEREMIAH RIGGS (JOHN, THOMAS)

A recent researcher states that he married RACHELL HASKELL 31DEC1716 in Gloucester, Essex Co, MA, Rachell having been born 13MCH1697. [S13] Rachell is said to be the daughter of Joseph Haskell, whose father William was the brother of BENJAMIN HASKELL, and Benjamin was the husband of Mary the daughter of THOMAS OF GLOUCESTER (Jeremiah's aunt). [S13]

Jeremiah was a tanner, and migrated from Cape Ann to Portland, Cumberland Co, ME in 1725 [S3], together with a John SAWYER [S11]. It was said that they both came there "with their families". [S11] He and his wife lived initially on the Neck [S11] (Falmouth Neck was an early name for Portland).

In 1733, Jeremiah appears twice in the York County, Maine Court records in cases concerning debt, initially as a defendant and subsequently as a plaintiff, both cases being heard the same (fourth) month. [S28] There is also an entry in 1760 (the tenth month) where a Jeremiah Riggs is the plaintiff in an action for trespass, but it is not known whether that is Jeremiah senior, or his son of the same name.[S29] Note that the whole of Maine was still called York Co at that time, Cumberland Co (and Lincoln Co) not being separately formed until 1760.

In 1735 Jeremiah moved to Capisic (later known as Stroudwater, Cumberland Co), where he bought a farm and continued his business as a tanner until he died. [S11]. The farm was later occupied by John Jones who married his granddaughter. [S11]

In 1753 he extended the house near Goose Cove that his grandfather Thomas had lived in.[S34]

George died intestate in 1798, though his death cannot be found in the Register. His 4 daughters each inherited a quarter of the house, a quarter of the cellar, a quarter of the garden, and a quarter of the barn.[S35]

Rachel died "at the workhouse" on 7MCH1813 at Gloucester, Essex Co, MA, described as being "about 75", though she would have been almost 85 (3:258) [S9].
