ADMINISTRATION AND GEOGRAPHY
The two maps above show the political boundaries of South Africa overlaid on its geographical relief, and are side by side to enable you to compare them more easily. As you can see, the area covered by the present Republic of South Africa is almost three times greater than that covered by the Cape Colony in the nineteenth century: the Cape Colony excluded the Orange Free State, the Transvaal, Natal and other neighbouring lands. When researching the earlier immigrants and their families, it's important to bear that in mind. The first map uses information from the "Sketch Map of South Africa showing British Possessions July 1885" which is now part of the Perry-Castaņeda Library Map Collection at the University of Texas at Austin, and which you can view on their UT Library Online website. The placenames in blue are the principal cities in the main provinces and place names in red have been added to show where RIGGS individuals have so far been located.
